ATO SMSF Supervisory Levy

Self-managed super funds (SMSFs) are required to pay a supervisory levy to the ATO on an annual basis.  The supervisory levy is payable to the ATO when an SMSF lodges it's annual return.

The amount payable is stated on the return and is currently $259 per annum (2019/20 financial year).

Where an SMSF is newly established, the first year it lodges it's annual return to the ATO, two years worth of levy are payable ($518).

When an SMSF is wound up (closed) no levy is payable to the ATO as the payments are made in advance.

The SMSF Supervisory Levy is an unavoidable expense payable by all SMSFs.

ASIC Annual Company Review Fee

Where an SMSF uses an special-purpose company as trustee, it must pay an annual fee to the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) every year on the anniversary of the registration of the company.

The amount payable is currently $59 per annum (2022/23 financial year) for a 'special purpose' company that only acts as trustee of the SMSF.

Where a standard proprietary company is used as trustee, the amount payable is $290 per annum (2022/23 financial year).  This fee also applies to trustee companies that hold the title of a property which is under a limited-recourse borrowing arrangement the SMSF may have entered into.

ASIC annual review fees can be pre-paid in advance for 10 years at a discounted rate.

Where an SMSF utilises individual trustees no ASIC fees are payable.
